Nexium® is a prescription medicine used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). GERD is a condition in which the stomach produces acid that helps your esophagus heal and seal food from entering the stomach. PPIs work by lowering the amount of acid produced by the stomach.
